This lovely antique cast iron and brass bed is queen size.  Simple lines with attractive castings help this heavy bed maintain a light sense about it.  It would fit into any type of space from contemporary to rustic to farmhouse to cottage chic.  It will hold its own in any sized space, but will not overwhelm any space.  The black satin baked on powder coat gives it an added touch of class.

The vertical iron rods are wider in diameter than most beds which indicates this was originally a high end bed.  They were made wider to address complaints that iron beds were too dainty and frilly.

Starting out as a double size bed (54") which was the largest size made at the turn of the last century, this iron bed has been stretched out to 60" and the side rails have been lengthened to accommodate a modern day queen size mattress. The brass shoulders, which the horizontal brass bar fits into, are original to the bed.  They have dings and dents which add character to the bed.  One on the headboard (see last thumbnail picture) has broken through, but the damage is not visible because that side of the headboard would face the wall.  The corner knobs, while antique, are not original to the bed.  Also, because this bed is now wider, the horizontal brass tubing is a modern addition.  It is not lacquered and will patina over time.

This wonderful antique cast iron and brass bed was made in Britain!  The cross supports running across the bottom of the headboard and footboard still have the original 'nubs' which secured the latticework slats which held up the mattress. We are not able to use the metal slats of old, but we do provide cross supports on which your mattress foundation or box spring sit.

It has been refinished by sandblasting off the old lead paint and then baking on a powder coat black finish in a satin sheen.

Before World War 1 ended the era of iron beds, cast iron beds were handmade.  The start of the war meant that all iron was diverted towards the war effort.  After the war, metal beds were mass produced on assembly lines and were constructed from aluminum, a metal that was much lighter and easier to work with.

Side rails and cross supports are included.

    Bedding and accessories not included.
