Outstanding ornate antique cast iron full bed circa 1880. This full size brass and iron bed frame, which may be a one-of-a-kind, is "one of the best beds
I've ever had" said my late husband who had been restoring these beds since 1974. It's also among our tallest bed frames and would nicely complement
a bedroom with high ceilings.
It took the work of a master craftsman to coax the different sized iron rods to drape so it looks natural and form. Exquisite Victorian bed. This iron bedframe is extremely heavy and adorned with large ornate castings. The castings incorporate Greek style imagery such as acanthus leaves, fluted Doric columns, ribbons, fruit and flowers.
This cast iron bed is finished with a lead free clear gloss coat of baked on powder. In some of the small crevices in the castings, you can still see original
bits of the sand that was used in the casting mold. All the iron castings are crisp and sharp.
We call the color pewter, but it is actually the color of iron after it has been sandblasted. After the paint goes through the baking oven, the castings cool at a slower rate that the iron rods and tubes giving them a wonderful luster.
Cast iron beds essentially stopped being made at the start of the First World War. Iron reserves were required for the war efforts. After the war, similarly styled beds were mass produced using aluminum a much easier metal to work with than iron. The days of handmade iron beds was over.
This full size iron bed cannot be converted to queen size, however, if you wish to use it as such, we can extend the side rails to accommodate the length.
Your mattress would overhang the side rails by 3" on each side. Alternately, you can use an extra long full mattress on it.
Side rails and cross supports are included.
Bedding and accessories not included.
