One of our favorite antique cast iron beds! We have nicknamed her, the Mona Lisa. This is a very pleasing design with beautiful castings and hand made scrolls.  Her presence would enhance any décor theme from modern to farmhouse to rustic vintage settings.

She was in rough shape when we acquired her, but we were lucky and were able to save her for future generations.  There is surface pitting in many areas, but it only adds character.  (We can provide more close-up pictures, if desired.)  It tells her story and the strength of her character.  The original brass inserts on the headboard and footboard were missing and/or too damaged and have been replaced using antique brass.

This iron bed was handmade by the Ideal Bedding Company of Toronto. In 1919 the company, which also produced excellent wire spring mattresses, was acquired by Simmonds Ltd which is still in operation today. The first world war ended the era of cast iron beds because it required all iron to be diverted towards the war efforts. After the war, metal beds were mass produced on assembly lines and were constructed from aluminum a metal that was much easier to work with.

I have seen many modern aluminum reproductions of this popular style.  There are two ways you can check to see if the bed is a genuine antique or a reproduction.  Easiest to verify is by looking at the connection point of the side rail and the corner post.  Original beds used cast iron hitches into which a cast iron cone style pin was inserted.  If the side rail bolts onto the frame, it is a reproduction.  The other way to detect this is by using a magnet.  A magnet will stick to iron, but not aluminum.

If you are using this iron full / double bed frame with an extra-long full mattress, let us know and we will lengthen the rails to accommodate the fit.  The longer rails would also take a queen size mattress, but please be aware that your box spring would overhang the edges by 3” on either side.

Side rails and cross supports are included.

    Headboard: 62";  Footboard: 42";  Width:  54";  Drop:  14"
