It's an understatement to say that this is an incredible antique cast iron full size bed frame!
Lions looking front, back and sideways as if to keep guard in all directions at all times. The headboard is quite tall so they have a good view!
Many of the other castings incorporate Fleur-de-Lis imagery.
When antique cast iron beds first became popular, some men felt they were too dainty and frilly. In response, some manufacturers tried to make the
beds more masculine by using animal castings and using wider than usual iron rods. Regardless of this, the beds were are considered light and airy
compared to the dark wooden furniture that had been in use.
The pewter color reflects the natural color of iron after the sandblasting process. It has been covered in a satin finish clear coat powder which is
baked on. During the cooling process the vertical iron rods and tubes cool at a different speed than the castings. This results in a beautiful
warm sheen on the castings. Computer monitors may distort the color, but it is a mid to darkish silver/gunmetal.
If you look closely you can see remnants of the original sand molds used in the casting process. There is also some original pitting of some of the
lion manes'. The lion faces in the center of the headboard and foot boards, show a bit of whimsy in their design. Together, these add a lot of
charm and character to this ornate Victorian style full iron bed frame.
You will notice that there is a small dip in the center at the bottom of the foot board. I'm not sure if this happened when it was handmade before
World War 1 or if it happened later in its life. I suspect it was at the iron foundry because the rod connecting the lion head at the top of the
foot board is slightly off vertical yet no cracks or stress marks appear in the castings.
The war ended the era of iron beds because it required all iron to be diverted towards the war efforts. After the war, similarly styled beds
were mass produced on assembly lines and were constructed from aluminum a metal that was much easier to work with.
If you want to use an extra long double mattress or a queen size mattress, let us know and we will be happy to lengthen the side rails. The queen mattress
would extend over the side rails by 3" on each side, but because of the flared tubing on both headboard and footboard the size discrepancy would
appear almost non-existent.
Side rails and cross supports included.
Bedding and accessories not included.
Headboard: 63"; Footboard: 45"; Width: 54"; Drop: 14"
